And we’re off!

Grafton Street has been in consistent in its importance in the city; as a route, a commercial centre, a meeting place, an icon of Dublin. However, it is fundamentally ephemeral in its nature; businesses come and go, shop fronts and signage are in constant flux, people move through, pavement is torn up and re-laid.

Every Irish person, indeed every visitor to Dublin, can reminisce about Grafton Street, about buskers, Christmas windows, sales, strikes, shop fronts... Whether your memory is specific to you and your life or has a greater cultural or social significance, we want to hear it. Ask your friends. Leave a comment. Images are also welcome.

Thank you for your contribution.

  1. I remember sleeping on the street outside HMV to see Westlife. On the same night, I met you and the gang and also ended up meeting Dara O' Briain and some magic guy. Was a good night;)

    1. Wow, completely forgot about that. Very typical fun Dublin memory.

  2. Grafton street and Coppers are the two places you always bump into people you never meet anywhere else. Also I like the unspoken rule that even if its quite thou shalt always get off ones bike once on Grafton Street.

  3. I did my first year photography project on Grafton Street, and subconsciously detour so as to walk down it on my route anywhere near. I remember walking home from town one night and the guy from the bread delivery van giving me a sliced pan for breakfast the next morning. And I always forget that people have different perceptions of "top" and "bottom" when it comes to this street.

    2. I think most people do, but I've definitely been left waiting at the 'other top' end once or twice - maybe they think of 'top' being closer to the centre, or maybe they're just fools..

  4. I agree with Lloyd, I always tend to make a detour to make a trip down Grafton St. even though another route is always likely to be quicker. Your always likely to bump into someone you know, and you might get insulted by David McSavage if your lucky.

  5. Insulted by David McSavage, now that would make an interesting paving slab.

  6. There's no other street I would like to on at Christmas, even if it is jammed. Standing at Nassau st. and looking up towards Stephen's Green, The large lights every 30 or so yards and extra street performers around this time also.
